What is per diem?

Per diem is a daily, tax-free allowance your employer pays to cover lodging, meals, and incidentals when you’re working away from home overnight. It’s separate from your hourly wage and doesn’t appear as taxable income on your W-2 as long as it stays within IRS limits.

Per diem has two components:

  • Lodging — covers your hotel, apartment, or housing cost
  • M&IE (meals and incidental expenses) — covers food, tips, and local transport

The federal government sets maximum tax-free per diem rates by city and county through the General Services Administration (GSA Per Diem Rates). Your employer can pay you up to the GSA max for the location you’re working in without any of it being taxed. Anything above the GSA max is treated as taxable wages.

Per diem exists because the IRS recognizes that living out of a suitcase for a 6-month data center build costs real money, and that cost shouldn’t be taxed as income. See IRS Publication 463 for the full tax treatment.

How does per diem work for traveling electricians?

If you’re a journeyman electrician living in Oklahoma and you take a 6-month contract on a Meta data center build in Virginia, here’s how per diem shows up on your paycheck:

  • You maintain your “tax home” in Oklahoma — mortgage, utilities, drivers license, voter registration all stay there
  • Your employer pays you two things: your hourly wage (taxable) + a daily per diem (tax-free up to GSA max)
  • For a Virginia job in Loudoun County, the GSA max is roughly $200-$280/day depending on the specific city
  • If your employer pays $150/day per diem, that’s fully tax-free because it’s under the GSA cap
  • Many data center projects pay 7-day per diem, not just the 5 workdays — because your lodging costs don’t take weekends off

The result: a traveling journeyman making $55/hour with $150/day per diem (7 days) will have substantially higher take-home than a local journeyman making $65/hour with no per diem, even though the local gross wage is higher on paper.

You must be working more than one day’s travel from your tax home for per diem to apply. If you can commute home every night, the IRS doesn’t consider you “away from home overnight” and per diem can’t be tax-free.

GSA per diem rates by state (FY 2027)

The GSA sets a baseline rate for most of the continental US (“standard CONUS”) and higher rates for specific cities. Data center hubs like Northern Virginia, Phoenix, and Dallas suburbs often have elevated non-standard rates. Rates update October 1 each fiscal year.

The current standard CONUS rate is $181/day ($113 lodging + $68 M&IE). High-cost data center metros run $200-$300+ depending on specific city and month (lodging rates fluctuate seasonally in some markets).

Typical data center per diem rates

Based on job postings scraped across our platform and reported wages from traveling electricians, here’s the realistic per diem range by contractor type:

Contractor typeTypical per diem rangeNotes
Top hyperscale GCs (Mortenson, DPR, Rosendin, Faith Technologies)$125 – $175/dayOften 7-day pay
Mid-tier electrical contractors on DC projects$100 – $150/dayUsually 5-7 day
Davis-Bacon prevailing wage projectsVaries — often rolled into fringe benefits as “subsistence pay”See DOL wage determinations
IBEW signatory contractorsPer Local agreement — some include travel/subsistence in CBACheck Local for scale
Open-shop traveling positions$100 – $200/day depending on locationNegotiable at offer stage

Where contracted, hyperscale sites in Northern Virginia and Phoenix frequently sit at the top of the range because housing costs are elevated. Builds in lower-cost areas like Oklahoma City or rural Texas tend toward the lower end even for the same employer.

Per diem vs. relocation: which pays more?

FactorTraveling with per diemFull relocation
Taxable incomeLower (only wages taxed)Higher (full gross is taxable)
Lodging coveredTax-free up to GSA maxOut of pocket (now your primary residence)
Home state taxBased on original tax homeSwitches to new state
FlexibilityCan move to next project easilyLocked in to new location
Travel homeWeekends/periodicN/A — this is home
Realistic take-home difference+15% to +40% vs. relocation at same grossBaseline

For most data center electrician assignments running 6-18 months, per diem beats relocation on pure dollars. The exception is if you intend to settle at a new location long-term and your current home is a drag.

Tax implications

Per diem is tax-free up to the GSA maximum for the location where you’re working. This means it doesn’t show up as income on your W-2 and you don’t owe federal income tax, Social Security, or Medicare on it.

Key IRS rules per Publication 463:

  • You must have a tax home — a regular place of business or residence. Living in a van full-time can disqualify you.
  • The work location must be temporary — generally defined as expected to last less than one year. If you stay at the same site for more than one year, the IRS treats that site as your new tax home and per diem stops being tax-free.
  • You must be away overnight — day trips don’t qualify.
  • Keep records — your employer handles most of this, but keep your assignment dates and locations.

State tax matters a lot. Your wages are generally taxed by the state where you earned them (not where you live). But if your tax home is in a no-income-tax state (Texas, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, New Hampshire), you can avoid your home-state’s income tax entirely on top of the federal per diem benefit.

How to maximize per diem income

Practical ways working electricians in our network have reported structuring their traveling careers for the best take-home:

  • Keep each assignment under 12 months — preserves temporary-work-location status and keeps per diem tax-free
  • Establish tax home in a no-income-tax state — Texas, Florida, Nevada are popular bases for travelers (changes to residency rules apply; consult a CPA)
  • Negotiate per diem up to the GSA max for the specific city — not the standard CONUS rate. Loudoun County’s GSA max is higher than $181/day.
  • Accept overtime when offered — OT at 1.5x compounds with per diem. A 60-hour week with $150/day 7-day per diem can net $4,500-$5,500+ take-home.
  • Consider shared housing — if the per diem covers lodging and you split an apartment with 2-3 other travelers, you pocket the difference. Still tax-free.
  • Track your travel days — your employer should handle this but verify your pay stubs reflect correct per diem days
  • Chain projects strategically — move from one DC build to another to maintain traveler status

Frequently asked questions

How is per diem different from my regular wages?

Per diem is a tax-free daily allowance for being away from home (covers lodging and meals). Wages are what you earn for hours worked and are fully taxable. Both appear on your paycheck but are treated differently by the IRS.

Is per diem taxable?

No, as long as it’s at or below the GSA maximum rate for the city you’re working in. Any per diem paid above the GSA max is taxable as regular wages.

What’s the maximum per diem the IRS allows?

The IRS defers to GSA rates, which vary by city. The standard CONUS rate is $181/day for FY 2027. High-cost data center metros can be $200-$300+/day. Check the GSA Per Diem Rate Lookup for your specific work location.

Can I keep the difference if I spend less than my per diem?

Yes. If your employer pays you $150/day and you spend $100 on lodging and meals, you keep the $50. That difference is still tax-free as long as you were legitimately working away from your tax home.

How long can I work at one project before per diem stops being tax-free?

The IRS considers a work location “temporary” if it’s realistically expected to last one year or less. If you stay at the same site more than 12 months, that site becomes your new tax home and per diem stops qualifying as tax-free travel reimbursement. See IRS Publication 463.

Do data center jobs pay more per diem than other construction work?

Often yes. Hyperscale data center builds frequently offer $125-$175/day per diem because they need to attract specialized electricians to remote or high-cost markets. Standard commercial construction more commonly runs $75-$125/day when per diem is offered at all.

What’s the typical per diem for a Northern Virginia data center job?

Industry-standard range is $150-$175/day, often paid 7 days a week. The GSA max for Loudoun County allows up to roughly $250-$280/day tax-free depending on the specific city and month.

Do I need receipts for per diem?

Generally no. If your employer pays you per diem under the GSA rate, the IRS considers it substantiated by default — you don’t need to keep lodging and meal receipts. Keep your assignment dates and work locations as records. If per diem exceeds GSA rate, actual receipts may be required for the overage.

What happens if I move my family to the job site?

You risk the IRS reclassifying your tax home to the new location, which stops per diem from being tax-free. Most traveling electricians maintain primary residence (and family presence) at the original tax home while traveling solo for assignments.

Can I claim per diem on my taxes if my employer doesn’t pay it?

For W-2 employees, no — the 2017 tax law eliminated unreimbursed employee business expense deductions through 2025. For 1099 contractors, yes — you can deduct the GSA per diem rate for business travel on your Schedule C.

Rates and calculations shown are estimates based on current GSA per diem rates and typical industry pay structures. Consult a CPA for personalized tax advice. For current base hourly wages by state and specialty, see our electrician pay-rate pages.
